A lifetime of adventure...

19th Prestwich Scout Group has a tradition of organising its young people into teams to enhance their experience of our adventurous, fun, active, challenging and varied programme, enabling opportunities for teamwork (in both games and challenges), peer leadership, rewards, badge tasks, commitment to the community and above all life-long friendship and close bonds amongst all adventurers.

This way of organising the Scout Troop and the Cub Pack is an age-old resemblance of the original values of Scouting, and creates a great sense of belonging, support and achievement in members only accessible through the passion and determination they show as a respected member of the team.

However, in our Troop, the most important thing to us, regardless of how many badges you have on your arm, is the smiles on our young people's faces when they laugh, learn and, most importantly, have fun. It is of upmost importance that our members enjoy their time in Scouting, that they get active, anticipating every week's adventures, and make great friends. Second to this, we are committed to providing a dynamic climate of learning in all that we do. Our young people have the opportunity to excel, succeed, grow, develop, and learn new skills for life in a wide range of cases, whether it be sporty or sciencey, creative or cultural, practical or personal.

At the 19th, we are proud to have such an enthusiastic team of voluntary leaders and proactive young people, all of whom are experienced Scouts who treat each other, not as teacher and student, but as friends. Scouting is great for so many things, and the best part of it is the friendships you forge that last a lifetime, and the incredible memories you make. Our scouts love to get involved in all activities they do, whether they're taking the kayak out onto the water for the first time, or shooting their 100th arrow. Some activities we do include climbing, archery, paddle sports, hiking, cycling, orienteering, performing, pioneering, and of course, the infamous camping!

2019 marked the Scout Group's 70th anniversary, and as we forever embrace new challenges, it is fantastic to reflect on how we have impacted so many young lives across Prestwich. We are on of 3 surviving groups in our town alone, and one of 10 in our small but magnificent district, which includes a HQ and our very own 65 acre campsite - Giant's Seat; a campsite that our Scouts themselves have spent numerous weekends at doing work on, such as the recent construction of its new activity range! During this weekend, they demonstrated exceptional skill in operating and managing their own campsite - having the knowledge and ability to survive in the outdoors for 48 hours!

As Scouts, we have a clear ethos composed of 5 core values: Integrity, Respect, Care, Belief, Cooperation. Upon investiture, Scouts make a promise to do the best they can, and as a non-profit organisation aiming to welcome all, we aid them in progressing towards their goals, targets and ambitions within Scouting and for future life. We equip young people with skills for life; practical skills; employable skills; and personal skills. We work towards providing these skills to as many young people in our area as possible.

I hope this statement has provided you with a flavour of and an insight into what we do at the 19th, our visions and values, how we work and learn, and what we consider to be important aspects of our enriched programme.

Yours faithfully,

Charlie 'Bucket'

E.S. Young Leader
